The Department of Journalism, Mass Communication and Video Production was established in 1999 and offered a bachelor degree programme in the discipline. Initially it was a self- financing department with the approval of the University of Kerala. The BA degree programme was regularized by the University and Government of Kerala in 2010 and the Department became an aided department. Permanent teachers were appointed subsequently. The Department has produced a number of mass media professionals and academics. In 2013, the Department started offering a complementary course for the PG programme - M A Malayalam with Media Studies.
The Department has consistently achieved top ranks at the university level since its inception. Many former students of this Department are working in respected media houses such as NDTV 24x7, Bloomberg TV, Asianet News, Manorama News and in other leading dailies in various capacities. Some of the students have become film makers of repute.
The current staff strength of the Department is 4, out of whom 2 are permanent teachers and 2 are guest lecturers. The permanent teachers are working towards their Ph D. Members of the Department function regularly in the Boards of Studies at both UG and PG levels.

The Department has a UGC Minor Research Project.
The students of the Department attend internships at media organizations such as Asianet, Kairali, Mathrubhumi and Malayala Manorama.
The students accompanied by the Faculty go for regular visits to All India Radio, Trivandrum and Asianet, Trivandrum.
Nethra is the student newspaper of the Journalism Department.
The students under the guidance of the Faculty regularly organise screenings of films and documentaries created by them. Photography exhibitions showcasing the photography skills of the students are also organised regularly by the Department.
